Ethiopia is an active participant in the construction of the “Belt and Road Initiative”. Currently, nearly 20 Chinese textile and garment companies have invested in the country, becoming the mainstay of the local industrialization process. Recently, the China Textile International Capacity Cooperation Enterprise Alliance and the Ethiopian Embassy in China jointly held the “Meeting Meeting between Ethiopian Prime Minister and Chinese Textile Entrepreneurs”. Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam said that driven by the “Belt and Road” construction, the two parties will Jointly promote cooperation in the textile industry to a new level.
Hailemariam said that Ethiopia has unique advantages in developing the textile and garment industry: relatively cheap and large labor resources, sufficient and cheap water and electricity resources, a stable political environment, a rapidly developing economy and a firm determination to industrialize.
“Ethiopia attaches great importance to cooperation with Chinese enterprises. Relevant departments, such as the Ministry of Finance, Customs Department, Investment Commission, etc., have set up China Affairs Offices to assist Chinese enterprises in investing and cooperating. Ethiopia, which is in its golden period of investment, is looking forward to working with more Chinese companies. Textile companies have deeper contacts, and the government will welcome the arrival of Chinese textile companies with great sincerity,” Hailemariam said.
Ethiopia is one of the most influential countries in Africa and a historical and natural extension of the Maritime Silk Road. Driven by the “Belt and Road” construction, many Chinese companies have come to invest in Ethiopia.
Sunshine Group signed an agreement with the Ethiopian Investment Commission in October 2016, planning to build a large-scale textile and apparel production base with a total investment of US$980 million in Ethiopia’s Adama Industrial Park. Sunshine Group Chairman Chen Lifen said that Sunshine Group has initiated a first-phase investment of US$350 million. The planned 150,000-square-meter factory has been designed and is about to start construction. It is expected to be put into production one year later. Qin Daqian, chairman of Huafang Group, said that Ethiopia is Huafang Group’s first overseas investment location. At present, the company is actively negotiating with the Egyptian side for a factory investment project in the second phase of the Hawassa Industrial Park. It is hoped that through the joint efforts of both parties, the relevant contract can be signed smoothly.
During the exchange with Chinese textile entrepreneurs, Hailemariam gave positive responses to several issues raised by the enterprises, such as the construction of supporting facilities in the industrial park and the location selection of agricultural and industrial land. He said that Chinese companies are welcome to carry out investment cooperation activities in Ethiopia after full investigation and inspection. The Ethiopian government is willing to work with the China Textile International Capacity Cooperation Enterprise Alliance and many Chinese textile companies to jointly promote China-Ethiopia textile industry under the guidance of the “Belt and Road” construction. Industry cooperation has reached a new level.
