Let’s look at how nanomaterials can accurately treat tumors: Tumor treatment must first accurately diagnose it. However, the current imaging technology commonly used for tumor diagnosis cannot accurately locate the boundaries of tumors, which affects treatment. The reporter learned from the Chinese Academy of Sciences that Chinese scientists have successfully constructed a multifunctional nanomaterial that can diagnose and treat tumors at the same time. It can not only accurately locate tumors, but also perform photothermal treatment of tumors. Relevant papers were recently published online in the world-class academic journal “Advanced Materials”.

This new type of nanomaterial was jointly developed by the team of Zhang Zhijun, a researcher at the Suzhou Institute of Nanotechnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, the team of Chen Huabing, a professor at Suzhou University, and the team of Ren Bin, a professor at Xiamen University. After the nanomaterials are injected into the experimental mice through tail vein injection, they can perform magnetic resonance/photoacoustic/surface-enhanced Raman three-modal imaging of the tumor site, and achieve precise positioning of the tumor through the complementary information of different modalities, and achieve Image-guided surgical resection and photothermal therapy of tumors.

The new material constructed by Zhang Zhijun and others is a flower-like structure core-shell nanomaterial (γFe2O3@Au). The surface of the gold shell has high roughness, which can effectively enhance the surface-enhanced Raman imaging signal and simultaneously improve magnetic resonance and photoacoustics. The imaging effect realizes high-precision, high-spatial resolution and high-sensitivity magnetic resonance/photoacoustic/surface-enhanced Raman three-modal collaborative imaging, that is, the location and contour of the tumor can be determined through magnetic resonance imaging technology. Through photoacoustic imaging, tumors can be located in depth and information on the internal structure of the tumor can be obtained. Highly sensitive surface-enhanced Raman imaging can accurately locate tumor boundaries to guide tumor resection surgery.

On this basis, the researchers further utilized the excellent photothermal effect of this nanomaterial to raise the temperature of the tumor site to higher than 42°C under near-infrared light irradiation, successfully killing the tumor tissue and achieving photothermal treatment of tumors. This work provides a promising new strategy for precision medicine in tumors.
