According to the British Daily Mail, this would be the best gift for a clumsy dancer. The newly developed smart socks by the American company Heapsylon will teach you how to dance.
The company points out that this new technology can teach people how to dance, perform physical activities such as golf, or help women wearing high heels develop good walking habits. Smart socks can be washed like normal clothes. They are made of special fiber materials and can monitor the walking conditions of the feet.
The sensor records every movement and transmits it to the smartphone through the ankle bracelet transmitter. A “virtual coach” app then analyzes this information, telling the user exactly what they are doing incorrectly and helping to improve any activities involving the feet. The smart socks, part of the ‘smart wear’ revolution that will change the interaction between humans and computers, are expected to be available as a trial tool from March 2014, priced at £120.
Davide Vigano, head of Heapsylon, said: “This design concept is to integrate technological elements into people’s daily lives. People are very interested in various sports, such as skiing, playing football, and cycling. Cycling and golfing, the use of smart socks can improve the skill level of these sports activities. In other words, smart socks can be applied to various activities involving the feet. An Argentinian friend once hoped to use smart socks to improve his tango dancing skills.”
At the same time, smart socks can make walking safer for women wearing high heels. They are made of conductive wires and act like sensors. When pressure is applied to them, an electric current will be generated. Designers collected pressure points in three areas of the foot: big toe, little toe and heel.
The data is collected through an ankle bracelet and compared with external conditions such as temperature, altitude and terrain, and then transmitted to a smartphone via Bluetooth technology. Users wearing smart socks can accurately record running distance and speed. In addition to studying how to run better, they can also perform gait analysis. An app downloaded to a smartphone advises users through headphones how to run at an optimized pace. This information means that keeping the user’s foot activities in optimal condition can reduce joint damage.
