With the arrival of hot summer, more and more beauty-loving ladies are accustomed to holding umbrellas on the streets to block the strong sunlight. Some health experts said that all umbrellas have a sun-shading effect, but the main purpose of using parasols is not to block the sun, but to block ultraviolet rays in the sun. However, some consumers have discovered that the sun protection effect of some umbrellas is far less effective than expected. To this end, the reporter used the “paper money” test method to conduct UV protection tests on parasols at different prices.
Use banknotes to easily test the effectiveness of parasols
The reporter first found a coated parasol and an ordinary umbrella marked with UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) > 50, and then placed banknotes with face values of 10 yuan, 20 yuan, 50 yuan, and 100 yuan in the sun. Under and inside two umbrellas. The reporter saw that the anti-counterfeiting watermarks of banknotes placed in the sun and inside ordinary umbrellas were very obvious, while the anti-counterfeiting watermarks of RMB placed in coated parasols appeared very light.
Parasol prices vary greatly, so will the sun protection effect be different? Subsequently, the reporter found a parasol priced around 100 yuan and a cheap parasol priced only 20 yuan, and conducted the same experiment. It can be seen from the test results that low-priced parasols are almost as effective as ordinary umbrellas and do not protect against ultraviolet rays. The more expensive parasols can block most of the ultraviolet rays from penetrating.
Some parasols cannot be called “UV protection products”
The reporter logged into a shopping website and entered “parasol” in the search box, and retrieved a total of 225,500 products. The selling price ranges from 20 yuan to hundreds of yuan, and the signs of parasols are often marked with the words “UV protection”. Click to view parasols at different price points. Many of them do not indicate the UPF value and UVA value (long-wave dark spot effect ultraviolet rays) in the information. In fact, the two standard indexes are important indicators to measure whether a product is a “UV protection product”.
A staff member of the Municipal Quality Supervision Bureau introduced that according to my country’s new “Evaluation of UV Protection Performance of Textiles”, only when the UPF value of the product is greater than 30 and the UVA transmittance is less than 5%, can it be called “UV protection” product”.
When buying an umbrella, you should carefully look at the UPF value and UVA value
The reporter conducted random interviews with citizens who often use parasols on the street. Among the ten people interviewed, seven citizens said that when buying parasols, they pay attention to the color and pattern of the umbrella, but they do not understand the UV protection ability of the umbrella. . Two other citizens said that although they would pay attention to the UV protection coefficient of umbrellas, they were not sure about the specific standards.
Through observation, the UPF of UV protection umbrellas currently on the market is mostly between 30 and 40, and only a few brands of products have a UPF of more than 50. In this regard, some insiders have analyzed that generally speaking, umbrellas with dark colors and thick fabrics have better UV protection effects. When consumers purchase parasols, they should choose products produced by regular manufacturers and carefully check the UPF value and UVA value of the umbrella.
Tips for choosing a parasol
1. It must be able to protect against ultraviolet rays. In summer, you should choose an umbrella with a UPF value greater than 40 and a UVA transmittance less than 5%;
2. Choose dark colors. Dark-colored parasols have lower UV transmittance than bright-colored umbrellas and are more sun-protective;
3. There should be a dark coating on the inside of the umbrella surface. The white coating will focus the ultraviolet rays reflected from the ground onto the face, and products with dark coatings such as black on the inside will have better sun protection effects;
4. Generally, the sun protection effect is related to the heat insulation. When purchasing, you can place the umbrella in the sun for a period of time, and then touch the inside of the umbrella with your hands. The sun protection performance is better when the temperature is lower.
