On March 26, 2013, news came from the Swedish Chemicals Agency (Kemi) that Sweden proposed to restrict lead and its compounds in consumer products. The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) invites stakeholders to comment on the proposal.
It is reported that Sweden submitted the proposal to ECHA in January 2013. In its proposal, Sweden intends to limit the lead content in items that can be put in the mouths of young children, such as clothing, footwear, accessories, furniture, decorations, sports and leisure products, etc.
Lead is commonly found in alloys, dyes, and occasionally used as a stabilizer in plastics. Lead exposure can damage the nervous system and affect intellectual and behavioral development. Fetuses and young children are particularly susceptible to the effects of lead. Other effects include high blood pressure and increased incidence of cardiovascular disease in adults.
Comments on the proposed restriction can be submitted to the ECHA website in a special online form.
Taking into account the timing of the first meeting of the Risk Assessment Committee and the Social and Economic Committee, the date for submission of opinions will be no later than June 1, 2013, and the final deliberative results will be obtained on September 21, 2013.
