Determination of the resistance of textiles to ethanol aqueous solutions

Scope:

1. This standard specifies test methods for testing and evaluating the resistance to wetting and penetration of organic solvents such as ethanol by using a series of standard test solutions with different surface tensions.

2. This standard applies to all textile fabrics.

Principle:

Use a series of standard test solutions composed of ethanol aqueous solutions with different surface tensions, and drop them on the test surface of the sample. Within a certain period of time, observe the wetting and penetration of the standard test solution droplets on the sample surface, and determine the alcohol resistance. grade.

Safety Precautions:

1. Organic solvents such as ethanol, methanol, and isopropyl alcohol are toxic, especially methanol, which is highly toxic and may cause combustion. Laboratories should have appropriate safety precautions, such as proper ventilation or protective masks.

2. Wear protective gloves or goggles when handling the above liquids.

3. Do not conduct tests where open flames or other combustion sources exist.

Equipment, reagents and materials:

1.Ethanol, chemical alcohol (Note: With the consent of the relevant parties, other reagents such as methanol and isopropyl alcohol can also be used)

2.Deionized water or distilled water

3.Drip bottle, capacity 60ml, with plastic tip dropper

4.Filter paper

5.Laboratory routine gloves

6.Prepare the standard test solution according to Table 1, and indicate the corresponding level number

7.Equipment: Figure 1

Sample preparation:

1.Take a representative sample 10cm away from the edge of the fabric.

2.The sample shall be humidified according to the provisions of GB/T6529, and the humidity shall be conditioned for at least 4h before the test

3.Cut 3 samples, each sample is 200mmX200mm in size.

Steps:

1. Place the two specimens parallel to each other on the filter paper (6.4) with the test surface facing up, and place them together on a flat and smooth surface. When testing the surface moisture resistance of light and thin linen fabrics, test at least 2 layers of fabrics. Otherwise, the test solution may wet the back side and the test cannot be performed accurately, resulting in deviation when reading the test results.

2. Before adding the standard test solution, put on clean regular laboratory gloves (6.5) and gently smooth the fluff on the fabric surface with your hands to make the fluff adhere to the pattern as much as possible.

1. Alcohol resistance test

1. Take one of the samples and start the test from the low level (level 0) of the standard test solution. Carefully add droplets of the standard test solution (about 5mm in diameter or 0.05ml in volume) to 5 different locations on the sample. The distance between droplets should be maintained at approximately 4.0cm. When dripping, the mouth of the dropper should not touch the sample. Observe the dropper from an angle of approximately 45° for (30 ± 2) s, and evaluate each drop according to Figure 2 and 9.1.

2. If the sample passes the test solution test of this level, adjust the droplet adding position, continue to use the next higher level test solution for testing, and then observe (30±2) s.

3. Continue the test until obvious wetting or wicking is observed around the droplets on the sample within (30±2) s. Record the specimen’s resistance to ethanol wetting.

4. Take the second sample and repeat the above operation. A third sample may be needed.

2.Ethanol penetration resistance test

1. Take one of the samples and start the test from the low level (level 0) of the standard test solution. Carefully add droplets of standard test solution (about 5mm in diameter or 0.05ml in volume) to 5% of the sample.different locations. The distance between droplets should be maintained at approximately 4.0cm. When adding droplets to the sample, the mouth of the dropper should be kept about 0.6cm high from the surface of the sample. The dropper nozzle should not come into contact with the fabric during the test. Observe the droplet from an angle of approximately 45° for 5 minutes. Evaluate each drop as specified in 9.2.

2. If the droplet of this level does not penetrate the sample, adjust the dripping position, continue to use the next higher level standard test solution for testing, and observe for another 5 minutes

3. Continue the test until penetration of droplets on the sample is observed within 5 minutes. Record the specimen’s ethanol penetration resistance rating.

4. Take the second sample and repeat the above operation. A third specimen may be required.

Rating:

Evaluation of ethanol resistance grade

It usually occurs that 3 or more drops out of 5 have a cylindrical shape with a large contact angle, and are considered to have passed. If three or more of the 5 drops appear locally deepened hemispherical droplets, it is considered as incomplete pass, and the series is expressed as the adjacent 0.5 level, that is, the corresponding series of the standard test solution that produces this phenomenon minus half a level . If 3 or more of the 5 drops are completely wetted or the contact angle is reduced, the wicking will be considered as failed.

Evaluation of ethanol penetration resistance levels

1. When evaluating whether the ethanol test solution has penetrated the fabric, you can observe the color change at the corresponding droplet position on the back of the sample. If the color of the droplet on the back of the sample is darker than the surrounding color, it can be considered as penetration; if there is basically no change in color, it can be considered as no penetration.

2. If one drop of the penetrating sample is found among the added droplets, it is deemed to have failed.

Results:

Ethanol resistance rating determinations should be made on two separate samples. If the ethanol resistance levels measured for two samples are the same, report this value. If the measured grades of the two samples are different, take out the third sample for testing. If the test grade number of the third sample is the same as one of the first two test results, report the grade of the third sample. When the test grade of the third sample is different from the first two results, the intermediate value is reported.

Test report:

The test report should contain the following:

1.This standard number

2.Sample description and test date

3.The name of the reagent suitable for the test, such as ethanol, methanol or isopropyl alcohol

4.Quantity of samples

5.The resistance level of each sample to ethanol wetting or penetration

6.The sample’s resistance to ethanol wetting or penetration grade

7.If necessary. Indicate the test surface of the specimen

8.Any deviation from this procedure
