Jalila Essaidi is a Dutch fashion designer who recently showed off her new collection at a conference: some white flowing tops, skirts and coats. They look fresh and smart, and no one would think that these clothes are made of cow dung.

Cow dung actually doesn’t stink very much. Cow dung on the grassland still smells like grass. It can keep you warm and can also be used to wipe your face. Of course, it is a processed cow dung mask. In addition, its commercial use as a raw material for hydrogen energy vehicles has also been promoted. But compared with using cow dung to make clothes, these are relatively easy to understand, because it is difficult to connect the material of clothes with cow dung.

The method used by Essaidi is to first dry the cow dung and then separate the cellulose from it. Thanks to the fact that the cows eat grass, the cellulose can be turned into paper after being separated from the liquid. And the moister part contains cellulose acetate, a natural liquid plastic. These fibers can eventually be transformed from liquids into imitations and bioplastics, similar to the way solid products are extracted from petroleum.

However, cow dung is more environmentally friendly than oil, which is the great significance of this technology. Bioplastics made from cow dung are biodegradable, and based on that alone, Essaidi could be developing a big business. Because based on U.S. data alone, farms produce 335 million tons of cow manure every year. Phosphorus and nitrogen contaminate water sources, causing a large amount of toxic algae. Conversely, viruses such as salmonella in feces also increase the risk of cancer in humans. Using biological means to transform is an environmentally friendly solution that Essaidi came up with. While purifying groundwater, it can also save the fashion industry, which has been repeatedly criticized for polluting the environment.

After reading this, are you also wondering why this designer is comparable to a scientist? In fact, Essaidi is indeed a talent, because she not only designs clothes, but is also the founder of a biological research institute called BioArt Laboratories. In the spider silk clothing we reported earlier, Essaidi also “appeared”. She once said that the hardness of spider silk is such that a 2.6-gram 22-caliber rifle bullet cannot penetrate it at a speed of 329M/s. If the protein of spider silk can be used to Replacing keratin in human skin could make humans bulletproof.

Essaidi’s research also draws people’s attention to the fact that fashion has also entered a technological era that values material innovation. People attach great importance to the research and development of new materials, not only for practicality, but also for larger humanistic and environmental propositions. Earlier, the student who used McQueen DNA to make leather bags also used design to start a discussion on a new legal process. Regardless of the outcome, these discussions are very interesting and meaningful.

Some people may find cow dung clothing disgusting, but at least it is quite comforting in its original intention.
