When it comes to firefighting uniforms, the first reaction of both firefighters and ordinary consumers is that they are so thick that they can’t breathe. There has also been constant talk about weight loss in firefighting uniforms. However, when reporters asked protection companies for advice, the vast majority of company leaders said that according to the domestic technical level and cost budget, it is not easy to reduce the weight of firefighting suits. The fabric used to make fire-fighting suits must not only be fire-resistant, but the outer layer fabric must also adapt to the harsh external environmental conditions. To meet these requirements, the thickness of the fire-fighting suit can only be increased. Relying on the fire-retardant properties of cotton fabrics and flame-retardant fabrics is the standard configuration of domestic fire-fighting suits. Currently, there is no very effective way to solve the problem of heavy fire-fighting suits.

Is it really that difficult to lose weight for a firefighting suit? In fact, this is not the case. In areas with relatively developed fire protection systems such as Europe and the United States, the technological improvements in firefighting suits equipped by firefighters have improved rapidly. Now we present the lightweight firefighting suits that are currently attracting attention in the global market, and discuss how high-tech firefighting suits can achieve the dual effects of reducing weight and improving performance.

The British CCQS Group and Imperial College London jointly developed a new generation of lightweight and efficient firefighter fire-fighting protective clothing in April this year. This firefighting suit applies multi-layer composite technology and dispensing technology, and adopts new insulation layer materials. It combines different layers of materials (waterproof breathable layer and insulation layer) to form a single layer of material, which can replace the previous insulation layer. The layer and the waterproof and breathable layer can reduce the amount of water absorbed by the fire-fighting fire-fighting suit, thereby reducing the weight of the fire-fighting fire-fighting suit after absorbing water, and greatly reducing the heat stress response of firefighters. In addition, the outer fabric of the firefighting suit also adopts Hainsworth’s REPEL+ fire-retardant treatment. Even after repeated washing, it can still meet the chemical protection and water resistance requirements specified in EN469:2005. This firefighting suit complies with the global high-standard “Firefighter Fire Fighting Protective Suit” requirements. Under dry conditions, the weight is reduced by 11.2% to 22.9%. After saturation and water absorption, the weight can be reduced by 50%. At the same time, the water absorption rate of the new thermal insulation material is reduced by 200%, while the breathable and heat dissipation performance is improved by 22.8%.
