One solution is to embed flexible solar panels into existing military backpack systems. The electricity generated can power night vision devices, radios, portable computers, satellite positioning and other equipment. However, the solar power supply system made with existing technology weighs about 7-9 kilograms, and the light energy conversion efficiency is also low. To this end, the U.S. Office of Naval Research is advancing a research project called “Simple Patrol System”, which includes lightweight solar power supply systems and drinking water systems. It is said that the solar power supply system in the “Simple Patrol System” weighs about 2.7 kilograms, but the power supply efficiency is 30% higher than the existing system. The drinking water system within the system uses a lightweight membrane filtration device that can produce qualified drinking water from contaminated water sources.
It is reported that some technologies of the “simple patrol system” have been tested on the battlefield. Capt. Frank Forman of the U.S. Office of Naval Research said that the combined use of these new technologies will provide soldiers with more security.
